Pursuing a business career requires solid preparation starting in high school, especially if you are clear about a highly quantitative specialization like finance. If you are looking for a program that can provide the kind of quantitative depth and immersion required to prepare you for a business degree, the Wharton Global Youth Program’s Essentials of Finance program might just be the option to pursue. Offered by The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the Essentials of Finance track is a two-week opportunity to learn how companies manage capital and evaluate risk. It is a selective, academically rigorous offering that mimics the pace of an undergraduate finance module at the Wharton School. You can consider the program if you want to determine whether you can handle the mathematical and analytical requirements of a finance major before committing to a four-year degree.

Before applying, here is all you need to know about UPenn Wharton Global Youth Program Essentials of Finance.

A quick overview

Wharton Essentials of Finance is a residential pre-college program hosted by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. It is designed for high school students who want to move beyond personal finance and learn about the global financial system through technical lectures and data-driven case studies. You will work alongside Wharton instructors and teaching assistants to study how corporations make large-scale investment decisions, analyze financial statements, and explore core financial concepts used daily in modern finance.

The program runs for two weeks during the summer, with sessions being held from June through August at the Wharton campus in Philadelphia. Applications typically open in late fall.

Quick facts

Location: Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA

Duration: Multiple two-week sessions running from June 7 to August 8

Eligibility: Current 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade students who preferably have a demonstrated understanding of economics or business; international students are also eligible.

Application deadline: Priority deadline: January 28 | Final deadline: March 18.

Tuition: $8,299 + $100 non-refundable application fee (financial aid is available)

What will you learn in Essentials of Finance?

The Essentials of Finance curriculum is designed to help you develop a foundational understanding of corporate finance and investment. Here, you will spend roughly 30 hours per week in formal academic sessions, which are divided between faculty-led lectures and smaller recitation groups led by Ph.D. instructors and experienced teaching assistants.

A typical day begins around 9:30 AM with a content review, followed by a couple of core lectures on specific financial principles or a guest speaker session. After a midday break, you move to group work, debriefs, and office hours. These afternoon sessions are where you will apply lecture theories to problem sets and case studies. For example, you might spend the morning learning about the Time Value of Money (TVM) and the afternoon calculating the Net Present Value (NPV) of a hypothetical corporate project.

Session topics and activities may include:

  • Accounting and financial statements: Sessions on how to read balance sheets and income statements
  • Fundamentals of corporate finance: Analysis of capital structure and budgeting
  • Risk and return: Identification of the trade-offs between different asset classes
  • Stock market and valuation: Use of discounted cash flow models to price equities
  • International Finance: Exploration of how global markets and currency fluctuations impact business

The program also features guest lectures from finance industry professionals. These guest speakers provide insights into current market trends and career paths in investment banking, private equity, or venture capital, bridging the gap between classroom theory and institutional practice.

The core lectures are all taught by Wharton’s faculty, who are also researchers and consultants for global firms, offering you exposure to the same pedagogical standards and technical expectations as Penn undergraduates. The access to this level of expertise allows you to seek answers to nuanced questions about market volatility and institutional strategy that go beyond what is available in a standard high school economics course.

On completing the program, you will earn a Wharton Global Youth Certificate of Completion!

How does the admissions process work?

The program is open to students currently in grades 9 through 11. The admissions committee looks for high-achieving students with a demonstrated interest in quantitative analysis. A successful application comprises:

  • At least one strong recommendation that clearly demonstrates your academic potential.
  • Proof of English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers via TOEFL or IELTS.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $100, though it can be waived in select scenarios

What do alumni have to say about Wharton Essentials of Finance?

Many alumni have spoken favorably of the tangible technical skills developed during the program, such as building basic financial models and using Excel for valuation. These are the tools analysts use in the field, and gaining proficiency with them provides a significant head start for future internships.

Student feedback also centers on the peer network. As a participant, you will join a global cohort of students with similar professional ambitions, allowing for high-level collaboration on group projects. Testimonials from the Wharton Global Youth site highlight that the program offers a realistic preview of the “work-hard, play-hard” culture often found in business schools.

Highlights from student feedback:

“We learned what goes into their (financial statements for publicly traded companies) preparation and the use of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) … We also practiced interpreting these statements using ratio analysis … We even touched on the basics of how to value companies with Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis,” said a past Essentials of Finance participant. You can check out the full article here.

“During my two weeks at Wharton, I considered myself an investor. I learned about all the detailed and complex valuation processes needed to make informed investments — and I grew to appreciate finding truth through careful and multi-layered research,” said another participant. Strengths and considerations

Strengths

  1. Access to collegiate-level instruction: As the Essentials of Finance curriculum is derived from Wharton’s undergraduate finance syllabus and delivered by the same faculty members, you will get an academic experience that meets the university’s rigorous internal standards.
  2. Exposure to a diverse group of professionals and peers: During the program, you will engage directly with faculty researchers, industry practitioners, and teaching assistants who are active in the field. This environment facilitates technical networking with both established experts and a cohort of high-achieving peers.
  3. Verification of academic aptitude: Earning a Wharton certificate serves as a formal credential for your college applications. It serves as objective evidence that you have successfully navigated a competitive selection process and completed a high-level quantitative evaluation.

Considerations

  1. Significant financial investment: The program cost is substantial. While you can apply for need-based scholarships, these awards are limited and do not always cover the full tuition, making the program not super accessible for everyone.
  2. Strict residential requirement: The lack of a remote or hybrid participation option means you need to have the means to travel to the Philadelphia campus to attend the program. This geographic constraint may be a barrier if you are an international student or cannot manage a two-week stay away from home.
  3. Highly selective admissions process: With the program’s strict criteria and competitive selection, admission is not guaranteed. Due to the competitive nature of the application and the subsequent waiting period, you should come up with a secondary summer plan to ensure your academic goals are met regardless of the outcome.

Our final thoughts: Is Wharton Essentials of Finance worthwhile for you?

The Wharton Essentials of Finance program is best suited for students who are comfortable with a quantitative-heavy curriculum and are seeking a professional-grade introduction to the financial sector.

If you want to spend your summer solving valuation problems and understanding the mechanics of the stock market, this program is a strong fit. It is particularly valuable for those who plan to apply to competitive undergraduate business programs and want to demonstrate their ability to thrive in a rigorous academic environment. If you prefer a more creative or qualitative approach to business, you might find the heavy focus on numbers and financial statements too narrow and should consider other summer programs.
