The NIST Summer High School Intern Program (SHIP) places high school students directly in research laboratories. 2. Johns Hopkins ASPIRE

ASPIRE is a technology internship where you work alongside Applied Physics Laboratory staff on project-based STEM work. You’ll be matched with a mentor and contribute to areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, aerospace engineering, programming, or data analysis, depending on project needs. The program requires you to work independently, communicate professionally, and apply problem-solving skills in coding, lab research, design, hardware development, or theoretical research. 3. UCSD Research Experience for High School Students (REHS)

Location: UC San Diego, La Jolla, CA

Cost: $1,795-$2,345, depending on hours (scholarships available)

Eligibility: High school students in grades 10-12 (16+) who live in Southern California, have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, and are college-bound

REHS introduces high school students to computational science through participation in established research projects. You formulate hypotheses, conduct computational experiments, and analyze results while working in small teams under the mentorship of research scientists. The NSA High School Work Study Program is a paid, part-time opportunity for high school juniors who live near designated NSA locations and plan to participate during their senior year. This program functions as a structured technology internship pathway for high school students, with placements varying by site and operational needs. Roles may include computer or engineering technology, cybersecurity support, language analysis, logistics, or administrative functions. You’ll need to balance academic coursework with afternoon work assignments during the school year, following federal employment guidelines. 

10. Northeastern University’s Young Scholars Program (YSP)
