Research Science Institute (RSI) is one of them. Over six weeks at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), you’re guided by graduate mentors who expect you to work through open problems, not complete pre-designed assignments.

What is the Research Science Institute (RSI)?

First started in 1984, the Research Science Institute (RSI) is an international summer research program for high school students. It is a six-week program hosted at MIT that places you inside an active scientific environment. During the first week, you move through intensive STEM instruction taught by MIT faculty and guest researchers, which brings you into advanced material quickly.

After that foundation, you shift into a five-week research placement. You work with a graduate-student mentor who guides you through an open problem in their field. Most of your time is spent doing actual research work like analyzing data, proving results, running experiments, or developing computational models. 

What will I do as a participant?

At the end of the program, you write a formal research paper and give a ten-minute presentation that follows academic communication standards. In practice, you move through the full research cycle: background reading, methodology, data work, analysis, writing, and presentation. This gives you a realistic picture of how scientific research is done inside a university setting.

What is the structure of the Research Science Institute (RSI)? When should I apply?

RSI runs for six weeks at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. You live on campus, attend intensive seminars, and spend most of your time working on a research project guided by mentors who are active in their fields.

General Structure

  • Instruction Phase (Week 1): You begin with intensive STEM coursework led by MIT faculty and guest researchers. The lectures introduce advanced material you’ll use later in your research.
  • Research Phase (Weeks 2–6): After the lecture week, you move into a research placement. You work with a graduate-student mentor on an open scientific question rather than a classroom exercise. Most of your time is spent running experiments, developing models, or analyzing data.
  • Final Paper and Presentation: By the end of the program, you will write a formal research paper and present your findings to peers, mentors, and faculty. The goal is to learn how research is communicated inside real scientific communities.

Research Themes

Projects change annually, depending on the availability of mentors and labs. You may work in mathematics, physics, computer science, biology, or engineering. The research question you take on depends on your mentor’s expertise and ongoing projects across MIT and associated institutions.

Cohort Size and Selectivity

Each summer, about 100 students are selected from an international pool, and the acceptance rate is extremely low.

Who is eligible to apply? What is the selection process?

Eligibility

RSI is open to high school juniors. You’re expected to bring a strong background in mathematics and science, since the coursework and research expectations move far beyond standard high-school material. The program is fully funded, and both U.S. and international students are eligible. Reviewers look at your academic record, essays, recommendations, and signs of persistence in STEM fields. 

You apply online through the Center for Excellence in Education. The application includes short essays, a transcript, standardized test scores, and recommendation letters from teachers or mentors who know your STEM work. International students follow the same process unless their country uses a separate nomination system. An application fee is required, though waivers are available. Materials are due by the program’s early-December deadline.

What do I need to apply?

When you apply, RSI expects the following from you:

  • Online application with essays: You complete an application via the portal run by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE). Essays ask about your interests, STEM experiences, aspirations, and motivation for research. 
  • High-school transcript: An official record of your secondary-school coursework through at least the first semester of junior year. 
  • Standardized test scores: If you have taken PSAT, SAT, ACT, or AP exams, you’re expected to submit all your scores. 
  • Letters of recommendation: Minimum two, maximum three, from STEM teachers or, if applicable, a research supervisor. At least one should be a math or science teacher; if you’ve done previous research, a recommendation from your supervisor adds value. 
  • Application fee: There is a fee to apply; fee waivers are sometimes available per the program’s guidelines. 

While RSI asks for standardized test scores if available, review materials indicate that applications are evaluated holistically. Strong academic performance, coursework rigor, recommendations, essays, and STEM interest may compensate when test scores are unavailable or lower. 

Timeline & Notifications

Applications open each fall (around November for many cycles), and the portal closes in mid-January for U.S. applicants. (International deadlines may differ depending on region.) 

Admission decisions are typically notified in March.

Is RSI prestigious?

RSI is extremely selective, and the academic load is closer to early undergraduate research than a typical high-school summer course. Each year, more than 3,000 students apply, and roughly 100 are selected. Around a dozen join mathematics projects, and the rest work in biology, computer science, physics, or engineering. The cohort usually includes students from across the United States and from abroad. 

The program’s standing comes from what you actually produce. You begin with fast, technical coursework, move into an open research problem, and complete a full paper and presentation in six weeks. That combination of intensity and independence is uncommon at the high-school level.

What are some skills I’ll develop as an RSI participant?

  • You adjust quickly to a new academic and residential environment, which can feel intense if you’re not used to rapid independence.
  • You might not get your preferred topic, since placements depend on faculty availability rather than personal preference.
  • The compressed timeline demands focus and stamina. If you have other major summer commitments, the schedule may be difficult to manage.
