1. Lumiere Research Scholar Program

The Lumiere Research Scholar Program is a rigorous research program tailored for high school students. The program offers extensive 1-on-1 research opportunities for high school students across a broad range of subject areas that you can explore as a high schooler. The program pairs high-school students with Ph.D. mentors to work 1-on-1 on an independent research project. At the end of the 12-week program, you’ll have developed an independent research paper! 2. Veritas AI

Eligibility: All high school students can apply to AI Scholars. Students who have either completed the AI Scholars program or have prior experience with Python can participate in the AI Fellowship program.

Veritas AI offers summer programs for students who want to learn more about artificial intelligence and its intersection with brain and behaviour, among its many tracks. Started by Harvard researchers, the programs are taught by instructors from schools like MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Princeton. The AI Scholars program is a beginner-friendly option with 10 sessions that cover machine learning, AI, and data science through hands-on projects using real-world examples. 3. Ohio State University’s Humanities & Cognitive Sciences Summer Institute

Ohio State University’s Humanities & Cognitive Sciences Summer Institute is a one-week program where high school students explore big questions linking the humanities and cognitive science. You will learn about how the mind and brain work, including how we think, learn, and process information. Topics covered include psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, and artificial intelligence. You’ll also dive into the humanities through subjects like philosophy, literature, art, language, and history, which will help you understand people and their experiences. Brown University’s Pre-College Programs offer an opportunity to engage in college-level academics by choosing from approximately 230 non-credit courses spanning various subjects. Experienced instructors lead classes, and you’ll spend about three hours a day in class, five days a week, plus two to three hours of homework or group work daily. If you’re interested in cognitive science, the Mind, Brain, and Behavior course covers various psychology topics from multiple perspectives. You’ll examine biological factors like brain structures and molecules, along with cultural and social influences that affect behavior. Topics include memory, emotions, personality, language, and thought. Columbia University’s Pre-College Summer Programs offer an opportunity to explore college-level courses in areas such as linguistics, business, philosophy, psychology, art, neuroscience, creative writing, and law. Along with classes, you’ll participate in daily activities such as faculty lectures, college prep workshops, wellness sessions, and community events. If you’re interested in cognitive science, the “Inside the Animal Mind: What Animals Think and Feel” course explores cognitive ethology, the study of animal cognition and behavior. You’ll look at how animals think, feel, learn, use tools, show emotion, and communicate, using research from cognitive neuroscience, psychology, endocrinology, and ethology. You’ll also visit the Wolf Conservation Center to observe animal behavior, try out field research techniques, and talk to experts.

8. Wake Forest University’s Summer Immersion Program: Psychology Institute

You’ll take part in classes and work on a group capstone project, while learning about current research from Stanford’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Faculty and researchers will lead sessions on topics like neuroscience, psychiatric epidemiology, clinical neuropsychiatry, behavioral and social sciences, and more. The theme for the most recent edition was “Clinical Neuroscience for the Whole Person,” focusing on innovative brain research and approaches to clinical care. The program offers an overview of how neuroscience contributes to research and medicine, especially in understanding the mind concerning health and illness. Participants attend two daily lectures or discussions led by Penn’s undergraduate neuroscience faculty. Additionally, you’ll participate in a journal club to read and present peer-reviewed neuroscience articles, and join a neuroethics club to discuss and debate ethical topics in the field. Hands-on lab activities will help you learn basic experimental techniques. Outside of class, you’ll explore neuroscience in a more relaxed setting through themed films, readings, and group discussions.

13. Barrow Neurological Institute’s Summer High School Internship Program

You’ll get matched with a lab and mentor, help choose a research project, and spend most of your time working on it with one-on-one support. Along with lab work, you’ll attend workshops and sessions to deepen neuroscience knowledge, explore careers, improve science communication, and get college advice.
