If you’re a high school student interested in stars, black holes, or the idea of exploring other planets, but can’t commit to an in-person program, online astronomy research programs can help you start early. These programs give you hands-on experience with real data from telescopes, coding tools like Python, and basic simulations used by scientists.
You’ll learn how to read sky maps, analyze patterns, write simple programs, and explain what you find. These are the same skills used in careers like data science, aerospace, and research. And they look good on your CV, especially if you’re planning to apply for future internships or science-related opportunities.
Finding the right program can be challenging, so we’ve compiled a list of 15 online astronomy research programs for high school students!

Stanford Online High School runs the Astronomy Research Seminar, a semester-long course where you explore real astronomy research. You’ll join live online classes and use robotic telescopes from the Las Cumbres Observatory and Skynet to gather and study data.
You’ll learn about key ideas like how life starts, astrophysics basics, quantum computing, and the search for life in space. Working in teams, you’ll practice skills in scientific research, data analysis, and writing research papers. By the end, you’ll write a paper that could be submitted to a science journal. This course lets you do actual astronomy research and build practical skills.
2. NASA Johnson Space Center, Texas High School Aerospace Scholars

Eligibility: Texas high school juniors who are U.S. citizens.
The High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) program is for Texas high school juniors interested in NASA and space. The program lasts 10 months during the school year. You complete five online modules covering space exploration, Earth science, technology, and aeronautics.
Each module focuses on one of NASA’s six core themes: Humans in Space, Moon to Mars, Earth, Space Technology, Flight, and the Solar System and Beyond. The lessons include STEM activities and assignments based on NASA missions to the Moon and Mars. You’ll research and plan manned missions to places like Mars, Titan, Europa, or the Asteroid Belt.
The course follows Texas education standards (TEKS) and can count as half a science elective credit, depending on your school. After completing the program, you’ll receive a NASA letter that schools can use to award science credit.
3. Lumiere Research Scholar Program – Astrophysics track

The Lumiere Research Scholar Program connects high school students with PhD mentors from Harvard and Oxford to do university-level research. You can choose subjects like astrophysics, AI, business, or other STEM fields.
Nearly 400 students have done university-level research in astrophysics at Lumiere, making it one of the most popular tracks. Past projects have studied how Dark Matter and Dark Energy affect the Universe’s evolution, and what factors influence the habitability of planets in our solar system.
The program is flexible, letting you choose how long and deep your research will be. This makes it suitable for students with different experience levels and time availability. The Lumiere Foundation also runs a nonprofit program for talented, low-income students, increasing access to this opportunity.
4. The Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics

Eligibility: Students must be rising seniors to attend, and you must apply when you are a high school junior or equivalent. Students must be 15.5 years or older by July 6 to attend.
The Yale Summer Program in Astrophysics (YSPA) is for rising high school seniors. It starts with two weeks online, followed by four weeks in person at Yale’s Leitner Observatory and Planetarium. You will study astronomy and astrophysics, use telescopes, and learn programming, data analysis, and scientific research skills.
You will work on hands-on projects, collect and analyze data, and help write a research paper. At the end, you present your findings at a mini-conference. The program challenges you academically and helps you develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
5. NASA Internship Programs

NASA offers online research and project-based programs for high school students interested in astronomy, planetary science, robotics, and Earth systems. Programs like Machine Learning for Earth System Modeling at Goddard Space Flight Center and Simulated Lunar Operations at Glenn Research Center teach scientific and technical skills used in aerospace and environmental science.
You will learn to use machine learning to interpret satellite data, run physics-based Earth simulations, and design rover parts for lunar conditions. Projects include training AI models, building and testing rover wheels, and analyzing data on space and climate.

The Stanford Program for Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in Physics (SPINWIP) is a three-week online summer course. It is run by Stanford’s Physics Department and the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology.
You will attend live lectures, coding workshops, and group projects. You will learn Python basics like Boolean logic, loops, functions, and libraries such as NumPy and Matplotlib. You will apply these skills to physics problems.
The course covers quantum physics, astrophysics, and cosmology topics like black holes, dark matter, exoplanets, and quantum computing. You will interact with Stanford researchers, explore current scientific work, and develop skills in analysis, coding, and scientific communication.

The Young Scholars NASA Data Science Analysis and Research Paper Program at George Mason University offers a mostly online, ten-week summer research experience. You will work with real data from NASA’s TESS and James Webb Space Telescope missions.
The program focuses on using research methods, statistics, and observational astronomy to study potential exoplanets. You will learn to use professional tools to collect and analyze telescope data, interpret results with statistical models, and support NASA’s exoplanet studies.
You will also join virtual nighttime observing sessions with George Mason’s 32-inch telescope to explore celestial bodies. The program ends with writing a research paper under faculty guidance. You can present your work at a symposium and, in some cases, submit it for publication.
