Horizon offers trimester-long research programs for high school students across subject areas such as data science, machine learning, political theory, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, psychology, and more! It is one of the very few research programs for high school students that offers a choice between quantitative and qualitative research! 

Once you select a particular subject track and type of research you’ll be paired with a professor or Ph.D. scholar (from a top university) who will mentor you throughout your research journey. You’ll work to create a 20-page, university-level research paper that you can send to prestigious journals for publication as a high school student.

This program is a solid opportunity for you to pursue a research program in highly specialized fields, under the guidance of a top scholar. Founded by Harvard alumni, Veritas AI offers programs tailored for high school students eager to explore artificial intelligence. In the AI Scholars program, you’ll work alongside peers on AI projects with real-world applications across industries like healthcare, finance, and education. The Ladder Internship Program provides high school students with an opportunity to gain practical experience in high-growth startups across diverse industries such as technology, AI, and health tech. Throughout an 8-week internship, you’ll work on real projects, guided by seasoned managers and a dedicated Ladder Coach. Through personalized training and collaborative sessions with peers, you'll develop essential skills in a professional environment. The program culminates in a presentation of your work, allowing you to showcase what you've learned.

The Young Founders Lab, established by Harvard entrepreneurs, is an immersive boot camp designed to help you transform your business ideas from concept to reality. This startup-centric program guides you in developing revenue-generating businesses, either individually or in teams while collaborating with founders from established companies like Fintech Launch and Fair Opportunity Project.

Throughout the course, you will engage with essential business concepts including ideation, market research, prototyping, growth strategies, and marketing, all supported by mentors and industry leaders. The Lumiere Research Scholar Program provides high school students with a distinctive chance to conduct independent research under the mentorship of PhD experts. In this program, you’ll choose a topic that interests you—whether in biology, data science, philosophy, or social sciences—and receive personalized guidance to create a college-level research paper. Writing coaches will support you through every step of the process, and the program culminates in a research symposium where you can present your findings, with the potential for publication. For students passionate about a subject and eager to dive into academic research, Lumiere provides the structure and mentorship to bring your ideas to life.

Program dates: June 5, 2023 – July 28, 2023, with compulsory 40 hours of work per week

Location: IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)

Stipend: Amount not specified, but all participants will receive a stipend (previous students have received $2,400)

The IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Summer Research Program (SRP) gives you the opportunity to engage in biomedical research. Paired with a mentor, you will work on projects involving lab techniques, data analysis, or clinical research. You will learn how clinical trials are conducted, develop skills in data collection and analysis, and gain practical experience in biomedical science.

The American Chemical Society is a non-profit science organization that hosts Project SEED (Summer Experiences for the Economically Disadvantaged) to offer students from low-income families a research opportunity in chemistry. During the program, you will work on an independent or group research project and get practical lab experience under the guidance of professional mentors. The program could also be accompanied by additional activities like field trips and poster competitions. If you decide to pursue a chemistry/ STEM-related major after completing the project, you will be eligible to apply for the Project SEED Scholarships.

As a high school junior from Marion County public schools, you’ll work directly with university researchers on a specific project, gaining hands-on experience in medicine and cancer research. During the program, you’ll explore various aspects of medical research, develop critical thinking skills, and contribute to important work in the fight against cancer. These week-long summer camps offer high school students a chance to sharpen their computer skills while diving into exciting, tech-driven career paths. Led by expert faculty from the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering in Indianapolis, these sessions cover a variety of in-demand topics such as artificial intelligence, bot development, digital biology, filmmaking, and web development. These day camps take place on the IU Indianapolis campus, running Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Open to students entering grades 9–12, these camps provide an engaging and immersive learning experience.

The SEED/STEM program offers a summer opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including fields like medicine, dentistry, computer science, IT, life sciences, chemistry, and biomedical engineering.

You will work directly with research faculty in their labs for eight weeks, from early June to late July. During this time, you will gain hands-on research experience at institutions such as the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indiana University Indianapolis (IUI), the Indiana Bioscience Research Institute (IBRI), and Eli Lilly.

Purdue University offers a Summer College program for high school students aged 16 and older, allowing you to earn college credits and explore different academic majors. You can choose from over 650 courses across various disciplines, either online or on campus, and complete coursework alongside current undergraduates. This program provides early exposure to college-level academics and prepares you for future success. While the program is not based in Indianapolis, high school students from Indianapolis are eligible to apply.

The Hannah IndianaNet Legislative Internship offers you the chance to gain hands-on experience with the legislative process. You’ll attend Indiana Statehouse committee meetings, take detailed notes, and share important updates. Working with full-time staff and editors, you’ll improve your writing and communication skills.
